Active Minds
Suicide Prevention Organization in Washington, DC
We first learned about Active Minds through the University of Texas Center for Counseling and Mental Health. We then reached out to their
founder and executive director, Alison Malmon, who is a huge help. They are a national organization that develops and supports student run
mental health awareness groups on college and university campuses in the U.S. and Canada. They have over 100 chapters in 32 states and we
hope to help them get one going at UT in Austin.
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
Suicide Prevention Organization in New York, NY
The national organization and the local Central Texas Chapter of AFSP were crucial in helping us get off the ground in January of 2007.
Their website is a constant source of new information for us. If you are just getting involved in suicide prevention or if you have been
involved for a while, their website is always a top go-to destination to learn more.
Kristin Brooks Hope Center
Suicide Prevention Organization in Washington, DC
The Kristin Brooks Hope Center is the organization behind the National Hopeline Network 1-800-SUICIDE
and the Youth America Hotline (YAH!) 1-877-YOUTHLINE, which is peer teen to teen support. We recommend
them as a crisis contact whenever we can and support everything they're doing. They are also rolling out an online version
of the call center in 2008 that we are very much looking forward to.
Alive Campaign
Suicide Prevention Organization in Waco, TX
This organization was started by four college students and has been a constant inspiration to us.
To promote reasons to live, they are riding their bikes from Texas to Alaska in summer 2008. Within several weeks of kicking off,
they were able to attract over 300,000 members in their Facebook group. College students around the country are now wanting to join
in with them and all meet in Alaska together. We are helping them in any way we can and encourage everyone else to do the same.
Be sure to read all about their great story and all of their members' comments in their Facebook discussion pages.
