Purpose and Mission of Better Off Rock'd
Music and Friends for Life
We all want someone who will really listen to us and take the time to understand us without assuming things about us - someone we can share our struggles with.
However, a lot of us don't think anyone can or will and we lose hope. The fact is that there are people who can understand - but not enough of us
make the time - even for our own friends and family members.
Our mission is to use music and musicians to encourage, educate, and inspire high school and college students to support their friends who are having mental health problems.
Since people in this age group are least likely to seek help, it will take close friends to provide acceptance and reduce the shame or embarrassment
sometimes associated with mental health problems. Our primary approach is partnering with professional musicians who have been affected by
mental illness who can connect to students in more relevant and meaningful ways.
We sometimes call ourselves a suicide prevention organization. But our message of "Music and Friends for Life" prevents more than that.
We believe if more students were able to be "that friend" - the one you can trust, the one who won't judge, the one who will listen, the one you can go to when there seems like no where
else to turn, that there would be less loneliness, depression, substance abuse, mental illnesses, and suicide.
We also believe that musicians can spread that message further and faster than us, so one of our strategies is to promote artists who share a similar belief and passion.
Depression affects more than 19 million people each year in the US. In any typical high school classroom, it is likely that three students have
made a suicide attempt in the last year. Among college students, there are an estimated 1,100 suicides per year (an average of 3 per day).
So yeah, that's way too many and we can all do something about it. It's preventable and you can help.
